Bidets

Introduction

Primarily used for washing your 'bits & bobs', a bidet can also double as a foot bath.

A Floor Standing Bidet

Generally available in two distinct types, the simple over-rim-supply version and complicated rim-supply version, bidets can be a very expensive and time consuming item to fit, mainly due to the stringent requirements of the water regulations. However if you are content with the simple version, it’s very like plumbing a washbasin.

To create a matching look, the choice of pan is often dicated by the selection of WC, and as such bidets are available as wall-hung, back-to-wall, and floor standing variants.

Over-rim-supply bidet

Put simply, this form of bidet is a low level basin. It can be fitted with individual hot and cold taps, or with a basin mixer, and it contains a built-in overflow which runs to the waste outlet of the basin.

Rim-supply bidet

This is a more sophisticated version of the over-rim-supply, whereby warm water is delivered to the basin by a channel in the rim. This means that when running the rim is warmed for the comfort of the individual sitting on it.

A special mixer set containing a douche spray is normally fitted to rim-supply bidets, which allows water to be diverted from the rim to the sprayhead mounted in the bottom of the basin.

Because the sprayhead is submerged when the basin is full, water regulations stipulate that a rim-supply bidet must take it’s cold water directly from the cold water storage tank. Similarly, the hot water supply must be completely independent and connected to the vent pipe above the cylinder.

Independent plumbing and the integration of a special mixer set, to comply with water regulations, mean that fitting a rim-supply bidet is a specialised task. As such if you are in any doubt of your abilities it’s best to consult a qualified professional plumber to install your equipment for you.

  • Dimensions: Bidets are most commonly 375mm wide at the seat, 390mm high at the front of the seat, and project 600mm from the wall. These dimensions can vary slightly depending on the manufacturer.
