Introduction
Once you've decided on the style of your new bathroom, the type of furniture you would like, and the amount of storage you will need, you will then need to try and fit it all into your room. This is often easier said than done, however with a bit of imagination and some careful measurement it's a lot easier to achieve than one may think.
Deciding on the best use of the space available
Measure the room you wish to become your bathroom. If this is the existing bathroom, also measure the position at which current service points are. Remember also to include the location of the door and window (if applicable).
Transfer these measurements onto a scale drawing. Graph paper makes this job a lot easier, try a scale of 1/10 (or 10 cm to 1 metre). Mark on the current service points if you plan to keep them, also note the height from the floor of the window.
List all the items of furniture you wish to have in your bathroom - shower and/or bath, hand basin, wc (toilet), bidet.
Next list all the fixtures and fittings your want - heated towel rail, shaver point, storage units, mirror, etc.
Using a separate sheet of graph paper, cut out shapes to represent the individual items you wish to place in your bathroom. To make your life easier consider all items to be square or rectangular. Most brochures provide dimensions of your chosen furniture, if not try measuring your current suite and us this as a guide.
Using the answers to your planning considerations, place the items of furniture on the paper in the best fit location for your needs. Depending on the height of the window, some items may be placed underneath it.
Remember to allow enough space to move around in when planning your bathroom, for example, when sitting on the toilet you knees shouldn't be touching the bath.
Using floor plans to ensure everything fits
The size of your room is without doubt the biggest factor in deciding the best fit layout, a small room leaves very little space for creativity, whereas a large room can be made into one large majestic bathroom, or split into a bathroom and seperate wc for example.
