Freestanding models are available in 3 basic sizes, full size, slimline and compact, to fit under the majority of kitchen worktops. If you're not too fussed about hiding your appliances away, then a freestanding model is by far the best choice - not least because it is often the cheapest.

Integrated and semi-integrated dishwashers are widely available for full size models, with a more limited selection for slimline machines, and inevitably cost more than their freestanding equivalents. The door of a fully integrated machine is completely disguised by a kitchen panel, and the operating controls are found on the top edge of the door.

On a semi-integrated dishwasher, most of the door is hidden by the kitchen panel, revealing only the top section to allow access to the controls.

Full Size – generally 85cm (33½in) high x 60cm (24in) wide x 60cm (24in) deep to accommodate crockery for 12 place settings. Recently a full size fully integrated dishwasher holding 12 place settings but 90cm (35½in) wide (other dimensions remain the same) has also been added to the market.

Slimline – usually 85cm (33½in) high x 45cm (18in) wide x 60cm (24in) deep to fit crockery for 9 place settings.

Compact – around 46cm (18in) high x 56cm (22in) wide x 47cm (18½in) deep fitting crockery for 4 place settings; these machines will fit on a worktop and can permit even the smallest kitchen to have the convenience of a dishwasher.

Dishwashing Drawers - The selection of dishwashers has been further extended recently with the addition of dishwashing drawers which can be arranged in pairs to fill the same space as a standard full size dishwasher, or used as single drawers, measuring 41cm (16in) high x 60cm (24in) wide x 57cm (22½in) deep.

Both pairs of, and individual, dishwashing drawers can be completely integrated into a kitchen unit.
