Laminated Worktops

Introduction

Laminated surfaces are widely available under a variety of brand names, such as Formica, Duropal, Axiom and Prima.

Fundamentally all laminated worktops are constructed from a high-density particleboard core, onto which a sheet of paper carrying the pattern is heat-bonded using resin adhesives. This forms a waterproof laminate across the surface of the worktop that can create a finish ranging from matt, through satin to gloss.

Smooth, glossy and dark coloured surfaces generally offer less scratch-resistance than textured, light coloured surfaces. A deeply textured surface, however, will be harder to clean.

Examples of laminated worktop surface patterns

To protect the particleboard from humidity a protective layer is almost always applied to the underside of the worktop.

A ‘drip seal’ is also applied about an inch from the front of the underside to stop spillages from running along the base of the worktop and into the cupboards beneath.

At a glance

Laminate worktops are;

what's good
  • Cheaper than most alternatives
  • Available in a wide range of colours, patterns and finishes
  • Durable
  • Heat resistant
  • Can be installed by any kitchen fitter
what's not so good
  • End caps must be finished with veneer
  • Invisible joints cannot be achieved
  • Hard to repair surface damage

Omega worktops

Omega® worktops are laminates that include Microban® in the surface to inhibit the growth of bacteria.

This protection is integrated into the surface so that it does not wash or wear away. It prevents bacterial spread by disrupting their metabolic and reproductive processes, so unlike an antibiotic, it does not encourage the development of resistant strains of bacteria.

Examples of Omega® worktop surface patterns

Omega® worktops are available in a dazzling array of finishes to resemble granite, marble, quartz and even wood.
