Gable
Upper section of a wall, usually triangular in shape, at either end of a house supporting a ridged roof.
Gable board
A wooden board placed at the end of roof timbers at the gable-ends to protect them from rain; also known as "Verge Board".
Galvanized
Covered with a protective coating of zinc.
Gang
A 13amp power outlet; 1 gang = 1 socket, 2 gang = 2 sockets.
Gauged brickwork
A brick wall, usually decorative, with very narrow mortar joints.
Gauge rod
A rod used in tiling and bricklaying for setting out and maintaining regularly sized mortar joints.
Going
The horizontal depth of one tread on a staircase.
Grain
The direction of wood fibres in a particular timber; also a pattern on the surface of timber made by cutting through the fibres.
Gravity fed system
A central heating and hot water system that moves water through the plumbing using the forces of gravity and water expansion.
Grommet
A rubber or plastic ring that lines the hole through which an electrical cable enters a fitting to protect it from damage.
Groove
A long, narrow channel cut in plaster or wood; in the latter, this follows the direction of the grain.
Grounds
Strips of wood fixed to a wall to provide nail- fixing points for skirting boards, etc.
Grout
Appied to the joints between tiles once the adhesive is dry. Available in different colours and waterproof formulas.
Gulley
An opening into which rain and waste water are collected before entering the drain.
Gutter
A channel along the eaves of a roof or the edge of a path for the removal of rainwater.
