Lagging
An insulating material that reduces heat loss and protects from frost. Fitted around a hot water cylinder, pipes and tanks.
Laminate
Any product that is constructed in thin layers. Most commonly refers to laminate flooring that has a thin layer of paper on the surface which carries a printed design.
Landslip
Downhill movement of unstable earth, clay, rock etc often following prolonged heavy rain or coastal erosion, but sometimes due to sub-soil having poor cohesion.
Lath
Thin strip of wood used in the fixing of roof tiles or slates, or as backing to plaster.
Lean-to roof
A roof that butts up to an ajoining wall and slops downwards away from the building.
Ledged & braced door
These traditional doors are constructed from a z-shaped frame, on which interlocking tongue-and-groove boards are mounted.
Light
Any window pane.
Lintel
A horizontal beam over a door or window opening usually carrying the load of the wall above. Often lintels can be partially or completely hidden from view.
Lipping
A decorative strip applied to the side edges of laminated boards.
Longhorn Beetle (Hylotrupe Bajulus)
A serious insect pest mainly confined to the extreme south-east of England, which can totally destroy the structural strength of wood.
LPG
Liquid Petroleum Gas or Propane. Serves gas appliances in areas without mains gas. Requires a storage tank and appliances to be specially adapted.
