Low Cost Kitchen Refurbishment

Introduction

To completely refurbish and refit a kitchen from new is an expensive and long-winded procedure. There is no doubt, that when the layout of the room is being completely changed or the units are being totally updated, that this is a worthwhile expense, but for some small kitchens fitted with decent units there often is little scope to improve the layout or storage, and your money might be better spent.

A cheap kitchen refurbishment can be done, however, as several elements of your current kitchen can be altered and updated to achieve quite dramatic overall effects.

Replacement cabinet doors

In everything but the most expensive kitchen units, the carcass of the cabinets is manufactured from the same materials regardless of the door styles that are attached to the front. A radical update can therefore be achieved by simply replacing the doors.

  • Don’t forget that corning, pelmets, plinths and end panels will also need to be updated to ensure materials and styles match.

Cabinet door handles

Door knobs and pulls can significantly change the look of the cabinets they sit on, and the range of choices in designs and materials on the market is almost endless.

When replacing door handles, try to find new knobs or pulls that will fit directly into the existing holes in the cabinet doors to make the job quick and simple.

Plinths

The legs of base units are traditionally covered by a matching plinth. Try swapping this for a contrasting material to add some contemporary interest.

Lighting

Light makes a dramatic difference to the atmosphere of a room, and innovation in this field moves at an incredible pace. There are now several different types and locations for kitchen lighting which can help to change the overall look of your room.

Splashbacks

Not just a practical way of protecting your walls, splashbacks are now widely available in a range of materials that can make a striking difference to the whole look of your kitchen.

Floor

Although generally considered as an afterthought, a floor surface has a tremendous impact on the design scheme in any room. A kitchen with a tired floor will never look its best.
