Tools & Tips for painting a wall

Tools for the job

To paint a wall you will need;

  • Sealant
  • Fine sandpaper or sugar soap
  • ¾ inch paintbrush
  • Roller, Paint Pad or 4 inch paintbrush
  • Paint kettle or roller tray
  • Stepladder
  • Plastic sheeting to protect your floor
  • Damp cloth if using emulsion, and/or dry cloth and white spirit if using gloss, to clean up errors or drips

Top Tips
  • Move all furniture to the centre of the room, covering it and the floor with plastic sheeting
  • Ensure the walls to be painted are clean and dry
  • If you are planning to paint onto newly applied plasterwork, you will need to 'seal the wall' with a 50:50 mix of emulsion and water before applying the first coat.
  • Begin by carefully painting edges between the wall and skirting, coving, and door/window frames using the small paintbrush
  • Complete the wall by filling in the body of the wall with the roller, pad or large paintbrush
  • Spread paint out thinly and evenly
  • Leave to dry before applying further coats.
  • Take your time, don't rush!
